One question we get a lot at HomeHero is, “How do you know when it’s time to hire a caregiver?” We wish that there was a definitive answer to give, but the truth is that there isn’t. Circumstances that arise are different for various people. While there is no exact timing on it, there are several signs that may mean that it is time for the family to hire a caregiver for their loved one.

Mobility is becoming an issue, both physically and with transportation.

If normal tasks around the house are becoming daunting or a risk of falling, it may be time to hire someone to help out around the house. This doesn’t only mean for doing chores around the house, but it also means for driving. Sometimes due to memory loss or physical impairments, the keys need to be taken away. If this is the case, than it is imperative that there is someone around to provide them transportation services.

Medications and personal care are starting to take the back seat.

As we age, personal care becomes more and more important. This also correlates with medications. Perhaps its for a particular skin condition that needs special treatment. Maybe the medicine that is being taken is for osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s. Whatever the case may be, personal care and medications should be top priority. If you or your loved one is unable to handle these personal situations, it may be time to hire a caregiver.

Companionship may be the right solution.

The part of life that we hate the most and don’t always anticipate is the loss of a loved one. It could be that it’s been a few months since the loss of a spouse, sibling or family member that is leaving a senior citizen in an emotionally unstable state. A caregiver can be a solution to getting your loved one to talk about their issues and provide them a means of companionship that they otherwise may not be able to get. Caregivers can bring out the positivity in people while helping them to be active and social.

Just because you don’t have time, doesn’t mean you don’t care.

Life happens. If you start a new job, have a child or have to move, circumstances can arise that may take you away from your full time position as a caregiver for your parent or loved one. Or perhaps you just need a break from caregiving because we know that it can become a stressful job. This doesn’t mean that you don’t care. What it does mean that it is time to hire someone that can commit the amount of time and days necessary throughout each week to care for them. Show them how much you love them by giving them an opportunity to have the assistance that they need.

Illnesses or diseases are more than you are qualified to handle.

When health becomes a factor in the well being of your loved one, it’s time to put them in the hands of a professional. If you do not have the proper qualifications to act as a caregiver in the health or medical field, don’t just try searching for the correct answers on the internet. There are plenty of qualified professionals out there, such as the caregivers through HomeHero, that can give your loved one the proper and safe care that they require.
